Apartment buildings

What to consider if you're moving into an apartment.

Apartments in large apartment buildings and, in some cases, flats in smaller buildings, are not covered by Powerswitch. This is because short-term tenancies and special deals given to landlords for bulk business makes it impossible for Powerswitch to make accurate comparisons.

You may not have a choice of electricity retailer in an apartment building. Some building owners buy electricity in bulk for the whole building. Some then set up their own "utility" company that sells this power to the tenants at a profit. Powerswitch does not include the prices of these so-called utility companies, nor for Bosco Connect which is a genuine retailer specialising in providing electricity to Auckland inner-city apartments.

Important: Before signing a rental agreement or buying an apartment, ensure you have a choice of power companies available to you. Check that your tenancy or electricity supply agreement allows you to switch retailers. Otherwise you could be locked into a contract and have to pay whatever your building's electricity supplier (and any middle-man company) charges.
